In the winter of 2010, BuyingClubSoftware.com will go live with a simple software solution for buying clubs and farmers, as well as any other producers, distributors, and groups of people wishing to band together to buy in bulk to save money and time for everyone in the transaction.

Who is creating this software and who is it for?

A couple of programmers from Portland, Maine who are part of a 130 member buying club and specialize in e-commerce websites.

 

Who would want to use this software?

Farmers, producers, distributors, groups of consumers, you name it. For now we focus on the local food industry, but this software can be used by anyone organizing a type of buyer and seller market online.

What is so special about this software? What does it do?

This software automates a group of people purchasing in bulk from a farmer or producer of any kind.

It allows a farmer to input their products once, and sell to more than one market.

It allows farmers to have one central location to receive and manage orders.

It allows for a group of people to order in bulk in a way that simulates shopping at the store. A person can buy 5# of flower, but as a group they will order a 50# bag to get a good price per pound. On the farmer's side, they get a simple order for one bag of flour to deliver. The buying club does the work of splitting that flour among themselves.

Why build software for this reason when there are thousands of e-commerce shopping carts available?

In creating a local food system, smaller farmers and producers need tight connections and consistency with their customers. Likewise, customers need that same connection to their farmers and producers, so they can be responsible about the food they consume.

After learning how the business works, we realized that there was no e-commerce software available for groups of people to organize themselves as a purchasing group. To take part in building a new local food system and develop a business around our love for local food, we decided to build a new kind of shopping cart system.
